Helsinki
You can be here in July for about €1,114, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in July: 21°C days, 15 rainy days.
Summer is short and used hard: terraces, the Suomenlinna ferry every twenty minutes, sea saunas until midnight. Winter is dark, cold and honest, with skating on the frozen bays and the sauna season at its best; in between, the shoulder months are grey but cheap and uncrowded.
Best months here: January, February, March. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Helsinki is a sea-facing capital of granite, neoclassical squares and 1950s modernism, run at a low volume; people go to the sauna, the library and the islands, and do not expect you to be impressed. It suits people who like design and quiet more than sights, and who will take a ferry for a walk in the woods.
What you can do
- 01Take the HSL ferry from Market Square to Suomenlinna and walk the fortress walls round to the King's Gate.
- 02Sauna at Löyly or the old public Kotiharjun sauna in Kallio, then swim in the sea between rounds.
- 03Spend an hour in Oodi library, then cross to Kiasma and the Ateneum for Finnish painting.
- 04See Temppeliaukio's rock church and the Kamppi Chapel of Silence, two very different quiet rooms.
- 05Walk the Design District around Punavuori for the Marimekko and Artek shops and the Design Museum.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Punavuori or the centre for a first visit, Kallio for cheaper and livelier; the airport's Aviapolis hotels are a 30-minute train from anything.
Unusual things
- ◦The Hietaniemi cemetery and its beach next door, where Helsinki swims in summer and skates in winter.
- ◦Seurasaari open-air museum, an island of relocated wooden farmhouses reached by a footbridge, bus 24 from the centre.
- ◦Vallisaari, a former military island opened to visitors, reached by ferry from Market Square in summer only.
