Why now

Prime time in October: 21°C days, fares below average.

Spring and autumn suit walking under the porticoes and the food calendar; in August the city empties and half the trattorie close. Trade fairs at BolognaFiere fill hotels for days at a time, so check the fair calendar before booking.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Bologna is a red-brick university city under some forty kilometres of porticoes, with a food culture it takes seriously and a left-wing self-image it takes more seriously still. It suits people who eat with intent and enjoy a city that works for its residents; there is no single monument, which is either the appeal or the problem.

What you can do

  1. 01Eat tagliatelle al ragù and tortellini in brodo at a trattoria, then mortadella and squacquerone from the Quadrilatero delis.
  2. 02Look up at the Two Towers, then walk the 666 arches of the Portico di San Luca up to the hilltop sanctuary.
  3. 03See the anatomical theatre and the Archiginnasio's coats of arms, then the Basilica of San Petronio's unfinished façade.
  4. 04Walk the seven churches of Santo Stefano in one complex, then find the little window onto the canal on Via Piella.
  5. 05Visit MAMbo, the modern art museum in the old municipal bakery, and the Pinacoteca for the Carracci and Guido Reni.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

QuadrilateroThe market lanes east of Piazza Maggiore; delis, wine bars, crowds at aperitivo hour; the central base.
Via Zamboni and the universityStudent streets under the porticoes towards the Two Towers; bars, graffiti, cheaper rooms, late nights.
Santo StefanoElegant streets south-east around the seven churches; quiet, good restaurants, ten minutes to the centre.
BologninaBehind the station, a former working-class district with a covered market and new bars; convenient for trains, mixed after dark.

Stay within the ring roads, ideally between Piazza Maggiore and Santo Stefano; the station area is fine for a night but has none of the porticoed calm.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Oratory of Santa Cecilia and its Renaissance fresco cycle, entered through the courtyard of San Giacomo Maggiore.
  • ◦Palazzo Poggi's university museums: obstetric wax models, Aldrovandi's natural history cabinets, and the Specola observatory tower.
  • ◦The Certosa cemetery beyond the stadium, a monumental necropolis on the site of a Carthusian monastery, on the San Luca portico route.

Good to know

Trade fair weeks make rooms scarce, and the Asinelli tower's opening depends on stabilisation work on the leaning Garisenda beside it.
