Belgrade
You can be here in May for about €593, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in May: 22°C days, 13 rainy days.
May, June and September are the months for the river: the splav floating clubs are open, the parks are used and the summer heat has not yet emptied the city. In August much of the centre goes on holiday; winter is grey and the fog sits on the rivers.
Best months here: June, September, October. May is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Belgrade sits where the Sava meets the Danube and has been destroyed and rebuilt around forty times, which explains both the mixed architecture and the refusal to be impressed by anything. It suits people who like night life that starts late, grilled meat eaten seriously, and a capital that is unpolished and cheap to move around.
What you can do
- 01Walk Kalemegdan fortress at sunset for the confluence view, then down to the Sava riverside bars.
- 02Eat ćevapi and pljeskavica in Skadarlija, or better, in a kafana off the tourist street.
- 03Visit the Nikola Tesla Museum for the working coil demonstration, then the Museum of Yugoslavia and Tito's mausoleum.
- 04Cross to Zemun for a fish lunch on the Danube quay and the climb up Gardoš tower.
- 05Spend a late night on a Sava splav; they open properly after midnight and run until dawn.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Stari Grad or Dorćol for a first visit; Vračar for quiet; New Belgrade's tower hotels are convenient by car but dull on foot.
Unusual things
- ◦The Aviation Museum at the airport, a glass rotunda with a downed F-117 fragment among Yugoslav-built aircraft.
- ◦Ada Ciganlija, the river island turned lake with a beach, bike paths and rowing courses used by the whole city in summer.
- ◦The ruined General Staff and Ministry of Defence buildings on Kneza Miloša, left as they were after the 1999 bombing.
