Amman, Petra
You can be here in October for about €566, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 26°C days, dry, fares below average.
Spring and autumn are the seasons for Petra and the desert; summer means hiking at dawn and hiding by noon, and winter can bring rain, cold nights in Wadi Rum and occasional snow in Amman. Ramadan changes opening hours and daytime eating but not the sights.
Best months here: September, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Amman is a hill city of limestone apartment blocks, a Roman theatre in the middle of the traffic and a café culture that runs on cardamom coffee and argileh. Most people treat it as the airport for Petra and Wadi Rum, which is fair, but two days downtown and in Jabal al-Weibdeh repay the stop. The country is small enough that the Dead Sea, the desert and the Roman north are all within three hours.
What you can do
- 01Climb the Citadel for the Temple of Hercules and the view, then walk down through the souks to the Roman Theatre.
- 02Eat hummus and fatteh at Hashem downtown, and knafeh from Habibah afterwards, both standing up.
- 03Give Petra two days: the Siq and Treasury early, the Monastery climb and the High Place of Sacrifice later.
- 04Spend a night in a Wadi Rum camp with a Bedouin guide, with the jeep tour in the afternoon light.
- 05Float in the Dead Sea from a public beach or a day-use hotel, then rinse; do not shave that morning.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Jabal al-Weibdeh or Jabal Amman for the city; at Petra, choose Wadi Musa for the early start and Wadi Rum for a camp night rather than a hotel.
Unusual things
- ◦Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) north of Wadi Musa, with painted Nabataean frescoes and far fewer people.
- ◦Qasr Amra, an Umayyad desert bathhouse east of Amman with eighth-century frescoes of hunting and bathing scenes.
- ◦The Jordan Museum's Ain Ghazal statues, some of the oldest human figures ever found, in a building most visitors skip.

Good to know
Jordan is generally calm, but check your government's advice for the areas near the Syrian and Iraqi borders, and be aware that regional events can affect the mood and flight schedules at short notice.
