Phuket
You can be here in October for about €875, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in October: 30°C days, 27 rainy days, sea 30°C, fares below average.
The dry season brings flat seas and safe swimming; the southwest monsoon closes many beaches to swimmers with red flags and cancels boat trips, though hotels are half empty and the hills are green. The Vegetarian Festival in the old town is loud, smoky and worth seeing once.
Best months here: January, February, December. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Phuket is a large island with a Sino-Portuguese old town, a string of west-coast beaches that range from Patong's noise to Nai Yang's calm, and a marine national park an hour offshore. It suits families and first-time Thailand visitors who want convenience, and it disappoints people expecting a quiet island.
What you can do
- 01Walk Phuket Old Town on Thalang and Dibuk Roads, then eat Hokkien mee and dim sum for breakfast.
- 02Take an early speedboat to the Similan Islands for snorkelling; closed during the monsoon.
- 03Swim at Nai Harn or Kata Noi rather than Patong.
- 04See the Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill, then Wat Chalong below it.
- 05Eat southern Thai curries and moo hong pork belly at a local shophouse, not the beach strip.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Kata, Nai Harn or the old town for a first visit; Patong only for nightlife, and the far north only if the resort is the whole plan.
Unusual things
- ◦Soi Romanee in the old town at dusk, a former red-light lane restored with pastel shophouses and small bars.
- ◦Koh Yao Noi, a Muslim fishing island in Phang Nga Bay, 30 minutes by longtail from Bang Rong pier.
- ◦The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary at Paklok, an observation-only reserve without rides or bathing.

Good to know
Red-flag beaches during the southwest monsoon have strong rip currents that cause drownings every year; obey the flags and the lifeguards.
