Las Vegas
You can be here in October for about €1,188, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 29°C days, dry, fares below average.
Spring and autumn are the outdoor windows, when the canyons are walkable past mid-morning and the pools are open. Room rates swing with the big trade shows and fight weekends, so check the convention calendar before picking a week; midweek is quieter and markedly cheaper than Friday and Saturday.
Best months here: April, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Las Vegas is a resort corridor built for indoor life: four miles of casinos on the Strip where nothing is a short walk, every hotel adds a resort fee, and the restaurants are better than the reputation suggests. The other half of the trip is outside it, red sandstone at Red Rock twenty minutes west and Zion, Valley of Fire and the Grand Canyon within a few hours. It suits people who use the city as a cheap-flight base with good dinners, less so anyone who expects to stroll.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Strip once at night from the Bellagio fountains to the Venetian; after that, use the Deuce bus or the monorail.
- 02Drive the Red Rock Canyon scenic loop early in the day; timed entry is required in the busier months.
- 03See the Neon Museum's boneyard on an evening tour, then Fremont Street in Downtown for the old casinos.
- 04Eat away from the Strip: Chinatown along Spring Mountain Road does Thai, Japanese and Sichuan at almost any hour.
- 05Book a Hoover Dam tour, 45 minutes southeast, and walk across the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman bridge for the view down.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay mid-Strip for a first visit and read the resort fee before booking; Downtown is cheaper and more characterful but rougher after dark. Anyone here mainly for the canyons should consider Summerlin or Henderson with a car.
Unusual things
- ◦The Pinball Hall of Fame on Las Vegas Boulevard south of the Strip, hundreds of playable machines from the 1950s onward.
- ◦The Atomic Museum on Flamingo Road, on the decade when mushroom clouds over the test site were a hotel-rooftop attraction.
- ◦Seven Magic Mountains, Ugo Rondinone's stacked, painted boulders in the desert off Interstate 15 towards Jean.

- Getting around

Good to know
Summer highs regularly pass 40°C and hikers die of heat in the canyons every year; walk at dawn, carry more water than seems reasonable, and skip the trails after mid-morning.
