Luang Prabang
You can be here in October for about €791, 4 days, 2 stop.
Why now
Prime time in October: 31°C days, fares below average.
The cool dry months are the pleasant season and the busy one; the hot months before the rains are hazy from field burning and the waterfalls are low. The Lao New Year water festival is the loudest the town gets, and the rainy season is green and cheap.
Best months here: January, November, December. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Luang Prabang is a small former royal capital on a peninsula between the Mekong and the Nam Khan, with gilded temples, French shophouses and a morning alms round that has become both a ritual and a tourist problem. It is quiet by law after eleven and suits people who want a slow week rather than a busy one.
What you can do
- 01Climb Mount Phousi's steps before sunrise, then watch the alms round from a respectful distance, without flash.
- 02Swim at Kuang Si waterfall's turquoise pools, going early or late to avoid the minivan hours.
- 03Walk the temples of the peninsula, Wat Xieng Thong first, then the Royal Palace Museum.
- 04Eat khao soi Luang Prabang style and Mekong weed with buffalo-skin dip at the morning market.
- 05Take a slow boat up the Mekong to the Pak Ou caves and their thousands of Buddha figures.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay on the peninsula or just off it for a first visit; the large resorts across the rivers are lovely but require a boat or tuk-tuk for every meal.
Unusual things
- ◦Ock Pop Tok's weaving centre on the Mekong, where you can learn natural dyeing and see silk looms at work.
- ◦The UXO Lao visitor centre, a small museum on the unexploded bombs that still cover the country.
- ◦Tad Sae waterfall, reached by boat on the Nam Khan, with terraces the rains fill and the dry season empties.

Good to know
Photographing the alms round from close range is a genuine nuisance to the monks; watch from across the street and do not buy rice for them from street sellers.
