Why now

Prime time in November: 18°C days, fares below average.

Spring and autumn are the seasons, with snow on the Sierra Nevada above orange trees in spring; summer afternoons are very hot and the Alhambra is a furnace by two. Alhambra tickets sell out weeks ahead in every season, so the dates are set by what you can book.

Best months here: April, May, September. November is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Granada is the Alhambra and a city that lives in its shadow, with a Moorish hill quarter of carmens and cypress, a cave district where flamenco is home-grown, and bars that still serve a tapa with every drink. It suits people who book the Alhambra first and plan the rest around it, and who like a city with a student edge; it is cold in winter and hot in summer, with the sierra always in view.

What you can do

  1. 01Book the Alhambra's Nasrid Palaces for the earliest slot, and see the Generalife gardens in the same visit.
  2. 02Walk up through the Albaicín to the Mirador de San Nicolás for the Alhambra with the sierra behind at sunset.
  3. 03Eat tapas on Calle Navas or in the Realejo, where each drink brings a plate, then a pionono pastry from a bakery.
  4. 04See the Royal Chapel's tombs of the Catholic Monarchs, then the Baroque riot of the Cartuja monastery's sacristy.
  5. 05Hear flamenco at a zambra in a Sacromonte cave, and walk back down through the lit Albaicín lanes.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

AlbaicínThe Moorish hill quarter of whitewashed lanes, carmens and cisterns; steep, atmospheric, hard for luggage, quiet at night.
RealejoThe old Jewish quarter under the Alhambra hill: street art, tapas bars, students; central and manageable.
Centro and Plaza NuevaBetween the cathedral and the foot of the Alhambra; hotels, shops, the Alcaicería bazaar; the convenient base.
SacromonteThe cave district above the Darro valley; flamenco zambras, a few cave rentals, a hillside walk from the Albaicín.

Stay in the Realejo or around Plaza Nueva for a first visit; the Albaicín is beautiful and a bad idea with wheeled luggage or a taxi habit.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Bañuelo, an eleventh-century Arab bath on the Carrera del Darro, older than anything in the Alhambra.
  • ◦The Monasterio de San Jerónimo, a Renaissance church with a painted interior and the tomb of the Gran Capitán, rarely crowded.
  • ◦The Carmen de los Mártires garden beside the Alhambra car park, with peacocks, a lake and views over the Vega.

Day trips

Sierra NevadaBus from the station, about an hour — Skiing from late autumn to spring at over 2,000 metres, walking in summer from the Hoya de la Mora.
The AlpujarrasBus, about two hours to Pampaneira; car about an hour and a half — White villages of flat roofs and chimneys on the sierra's south side: Pampaneira, Bubión, Capileira; walk between them.
GuadixTrain or bus, about an hour — A cathedral town where thousands still live in cave houses cut into the clay hills; a cave museum and a Moorish alcazaba.
