Chiang Mai
You can be here in January for about €801, 4 days, 2 stop.
Why now
Prime time in January: 27°C days, dry.
The cool, dry months after the rains are the pleasant ones, and the city fills for the lantern festival and the Thai New Year; the late dry season brings field burning and some of the worst air in Asia for weeks, which is the time to avoid. The rainy season is green and quiet, with storms mostly late in the day.
Best months here: January, February, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Chiang Mai is a moated square of temples and guesthouses with a modern city grown around it, close enough to the mountains that Doi Suthep's stupa is visible from the old town. It suits slow days: a temple, a khao soi lunch, a cooking class, a night market, and hills within an hour when the city wears thin.
What you can do
- 01Ride a red songthaew up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep at dawn, before the tour buses reach the naga staircase.
- 02Eat khao soi at Khao Soi Khun Yai or Khao Soi Mae Sai, then browse the Sunday walking street on Ratchadamnoen Road.
- 03Walk the old town's temples: Wat Chedi Luang's ruined stupa, Wat Phra Singh, and the small teak Wat Phan Tao.
- 04Spend a day at an elephant sanctuary that does not offer riding; book ahead and read recent reviews.
- 05Take a cooking class that starts with a morning market visit, the standard Chiang Mai half-day for good reason.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay inside the moat for a first visit, or in Nimmanhaemin if you want cafés and nightlife; the Night Bazaar strip is convenient but characterless.
Unusual things
- ◦Wat Pha Lat, a jungle temple halfway up Doi Suthep reached by the Monk's Trail from behind the university.
- ◦Wat Umong, a forest temple of brick tunnels and a field of broken Buddha statues at the foot of the mountain.
- ◦Warorot Market by the river, the Chinese-Thai market for sai ua sausage, northern chilli dips and the flower stalls.

Good to know
Smoke from field burning makes the late dry season hazardous for anyone with asthma, with air quality readings that regularly rank among the world's worst for days at a time.
