Boston
You can be here in August for about €2,112, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in August: 26°C days, peak fares.
Autumn is the reason most people come, with the foliage in the Berkshires and New Hampshire within a couple of hours and the Head of the Charles regatta filling the river in general terms. University move-in and graduation weekends make hotels scarce, and the marathon weekend does the same in spring.
Best months here: June, September, October. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Boston is the closest American city to a European one in scale: brick, cobbles, a harbour, a river with rowers on it, and a centre you can cross on foot in forty minutes. It suits people who like history told by plaques and universities, seafood, and a quiet evening; nightlife is early and the winters are long.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Freedom Trail from the Common to Bunker Hill, skipping the gift shops, then eat cannoli in the North End.
- 02Cross the river to Cambridge for Harvard Yard, the Harvard Art Museums and the MIT Museum.
- 03Spend an afternoon at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a Venetian palazzo around a courtyard garden.
- 04Eat a lobster roll and clam chowder at a harbour shack, then walk the Harborwalk to the ICA.
- 05See a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, the oldest ballpark in the majors, or take the tour on an off day.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Back Bay or Beacon Hill for walking, Cambridge for lower rates and the campuses; the Seaport is new and convenient but has little character.
Unusual things
- ◦The Mapparium at the Christian Science Plaza, a three-storey stained-glass globe walked through on a bridge.
- ◦Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, the first garden cemetery in the United States, with a tower view of the skyline.
- ◦The Boston Athenaeum on Beacon Street, a members' library from 1807 with public tours and reading rooms.
