Rio de Janeiro
You can be here in October for about €1,643, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in October: 27°C days, 14 rainy days, sea 23°C.
The southern winter, from roughly May to September, is drier and cooler, with clearer views from the peaks and a beach still warm enough to use. Carnival week sells out months ahead and doubles prices; the weeks after it are quiet and good.
Best months here: March, May, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Rio de Janeiro is a city squeezed between granite peaks and the Atlantic, where the beach is a public living room and the geography does most of the work. It suits people who can accept a certain untidiness and real inequality in exchange for a setting that no other large city matches.
What you can do
- 01Take the cog train up Corcovado early, before the clouds sit on Christ the Redeemer's head.
- 02Ride the cable car to Sugarloaf for sunset, then walk back along Praia Vermelha.
- 03Swim at Ipanema between Postos 8 and 9, and eat a pastel and a coconut from a kiosk.
- 04Walk Santa Teresa's hills and the Escadaria Selarón down to Lapa, then samba on a Friday night.
- 05See the Museu do Amanhã and the tiled murals of Boulevard Olímpico on the renewed port waterfront.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Ipanema or Leblon for a first visit, Copacabana if budget matters; avoid the centre after office hours, when it empties fast.
Unusual things
- ◦Parque Lage, a mansion garden at the foot of Corcovado with a café in the courtyard and trails into the forest.
- ◦The Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, a neo-Manueline reading room in the centre, free and rarely busy.
- ◦The Pedra do Sal in Saúde, birthplace of samba, with open-air rodas on Monday and Friday evenings.

Good to know
Street robbery is common, so carry no valuables to the beach, keep phones away on the street, and avoid walking on the sand after dark; do not enter favelas without a local guide.
