Why now
Shoulder season in March: 17°C days, 13 rainy days, sea 15°C.
The Campo dei Miracoli is busy from mid-morning to late afternoon year-round; the Lungarni are their own place at dusk, and in June the river is lit with candles for the city's patron saint. Tuscany's hill towns are calmer outside the summer school-holiday weeks and the wine harvest.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Pisa has a single field with the tower, the cathedral and the baptistery that everyone sees for ninety minutes, and a real river town of student bars, Lungarni palaces and Romanesque churches that almost nobody does. It suits people using the airport as a door to Tuscany who want a base cheaper and less staged than Florence, with Lucca and the coast twenty to thirty minutes away.
What you can do
- 01Book a tower slot for early morning, then see the Camposanto frescoes and the baptistery's echo before the coaches.
- 02Walk the Lungarni from Ponte di Mezzo to Santa Maria della Spina, the small Gothic church on the river's edge.
- 03Eat cecina, chickpea flatbread, from a bakery near Borgo Stretto, and a tordelli dinner in a trattoria off Piazza delle Vettovaglie.
- 04Take the train to Lucca, 25 minutes, and cycle the top of the city walls.
- 05See Piazza dei Cavalieri's Scuola Normale and the Keith Haring mural Tuttomondo by the station.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay near Borgo Stretto or the river; the streets around the tower are hotels and souvenir stalls and dead by evening. For a longer Tuscany stay, Lucca is the better base.
Unusual things
- ◦Museo delle Navi Antiche in the old Medici arsenals, with Roman ships excavated from silt behind San Rossore station.
- ◦The Certosa di Calci, a monastery ten kilometres east with the university's natural history museum inside.
- ◦San Rossore park, a walk or cycle from the city through pine woods to the beach where the Arno meets the sea.
