Nairobi
You can be here in December for about €1,005, 3 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in December: 26°C days, 19 rainy days.
The dry seasons are when game viewing is easiest and the roads to the parks are passable; the long rains turn Maasai Mara tracks to mud and close some camps. The wildebeest migration fills Mara lodges months ahead, so booking early matters more than the weather.
Best months here: February, July, September. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Nairobi is a working capital that most people treat as a corridor to the parks, which is a mistake: it has a national park inside the city limits, a serious restaurant and music scene, and traffic that shapes every plan. It suits travellers who can give it two nights before the safari and want to see how Kenya actually runs.
What you can do
- 01Drive Nairobi National Park at dawn: lions and rhino against the skyline, twenty minutes from Karen.
- 02Visit the Sheldrick elephant orphanage at the daily feeding hour, then the Giraffe Centre in Langata.
- 03Eat nyama choma with kachumbari at a roadside grill in Westlands or Kilimani.
- 04Ride the SGR train to Mombasa, five hours through Tsavo, for a coast add-on.
- 05Fly to the Maasai Mara from Wilson Airport on a morning bush flight, about 45 minutes.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Base in Westlands or Kilimani for a short stop, Karen if the park and the animal centres are the point; avoid the CBD at night and any hotel that requires a long commute across town.
Unusual things
- ◦Karura Forest, a thousand hectares of trails and waterfalls in the city, best cycled early on a weekday.
- ◦The Railway Museum near the station, with the carriage from the Tsavo man-eaters era.
- ◦Kenyatta International Convention Centre helipad, the cheapest clear view over the CBD and the park beyond.

Good to know
Petty crime and phone-snatching are common in the CBD, so avoid walking there after dark and keep valuables out of sight in traffic.
