Lofoten
You can be here in December for about €1,167, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in December: 2°C days, 21 rainy days, snow season.
The midnight-sun weeks are the crowded ones, when rorbuer are booked out and the E10 lay-bys fill with camper vans; the winter cod season fills the racks with drying stockfish and, on clear nights, the sky with aurora. Early autumn splits the difference, with the hikes still open, the first northern lights and rooms easier to find.
Best months here: January, February, March. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Lofoten is a row of granite peaks rising straight out of the sea above the Arctic Circle, with fishing villages on stilts at their feet and one road, the E10, stitched along them by bridges and tunnels. It suits walkers, photographers and people happy to drive; there is no city, almost no nightlife, and the weather writes the itinerary.
What you can do
- 01Climb Reinebringen's stone Sherpa steps early in the morning before the tour buses arrive; the path closes when icy.
- 02Drive the E10 to Å at the end of the road and visit the stockfish museum, then double back for the villages you passed.
- 03Walk to Kvalvika beach from Fredvang and, with legs left, continue up Ryten for the view straight down onto the sand.
- 04Take the boat from Svolvær into the Trollfjord, a slot of water under thousand-metre walls; sea eagles follow the boats.
- 05Spend a day at Haukland and Uttakleiv beaches on Vestvågøy: white sand, cold clear water, a coastal path between them.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Rorbuer, the converted fishermen's cabins on the water, are the point; choose Reine or Hamnøy for the scenery, Svolvær or Kabelvåg for restaurants and boats, and accept that anything good is booked months ahead for the midnight-sun weeks.
Unusual things
- ◦Skrova, a small island 30 minutes by express boat from Svolvær, with a sandy beach, a whaling past and one steep hill for the view.
- ◦KaviarFactory in Henningsvær, a contemporary art space in a former caviar factory beside the harbour.
- ◦The Second World War radar ruins at Eggum on the north coast, next to Markus Raetz's sculpture Hode, which changes shape as you walk around it.

- Getting around
- A car is essential; buses along the E10 run only a few times a day. Fly to Leknes or Svolvær via Bodø, or to Evenes and drive about three hours; the Bodø to Moskenes ferry takes around three and a half hours and needs a reservation in summer.

Good to know
Weather turns fast at any season; Reinebringen and the ridge walks are dangerous in snow and ice, and winter storms close roads and cancel ferries.
