Why now

Prime time in June: 23°C days, dry, sea 23°C.

June and September are the months when the water is warm and the island is not full; in July and August boats to the coves are booked days ahead. From November to April most things close, ferries are erratic and flights thin out.

Best months here: July, September, October. June is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Lampedusa is a flat limestone slab in the Strait of Sicily, nearer Africa than Italy, with a single town, a scrub interior and a south coast of coves that photograph like the Caribbean. It suits people who want to swim and little else; it is also a frontline of Mediterranean migration, and the two facts sit side by side.

What you can do

  1. 01Swim at the Spiaggia dei Conigli, reached on foot down a path, with daily numbers capped and turtles nesting in summer.
  2. 02Take a boat round the island for the Tabaccara and Cala Pulcino, the coves with the clearest water.
  3. 03Eat couscous di pesce and spaghetti with sea urchin, then join the evening walk along Via Roma.
  4. 04Visit the Porta di Lampedusa, Mimmo Paladino's ceramic gate on the cliff, a memorial to migrants lost at sea.
  5. 05Snorkel off Cala Croce or Cala Madonna near town, or take the summer hydrofoil to Linosa for black volcanic beaches.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Lampedusa townThe only town: Via Roma, the harbour, restaurants, scooter hire; everything is here, and it is noisy in August.
Cala Croce and Cala GuitgiaThe coves closest to town, with the island's few beachside hotels; walkable, busy.
The south coastRock coves from Cala Galera to the Conigli, reached by scooter and steps; rentals on the plateau above, no shops.
LinosaThe volcanic sister island an hour away by boat; a handful of painted houses, black sand and almost no cars.

Stay in or just outside the town for a first visit, within walking distance of the harbour; villas on the south plateau are quieter but need a scooter or car.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Museum of Trust and Dialogue for the Mediterranean, a small museum near the port on the island's migration history.
  • ◦The Tabaccara, a bay on the south-west coast with water so clear that anchored boats appear to float; boats only.
  • ◦The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Porto Salvo, a chapel in a garden of cactus and eucalyptus inland from the town.

Day trips

LinosaHydrofoil, about an hour, seasonal — A volcanic islet of black sand and painted houses; the last boat back is early, so check times.
Boat circuit of the islandBoat from the harbour, a full day with lunch on board — The Tabaccara, Cala Pulcino and the sea caves under the north cliffs; sea conditions decide the route.
The Conigli reserve trailsBus or scooter, 15 minutes, then on foot — The nature reserve paths above the Conigli beach, with the islet offshore and turtle nests fenced in summer.

Good to know

The island is a first landing point for migrants crossing from North Africa; arrivals are managed away from the visitor areas and rarely affect a holiday, but they are a real part of the place.
