Why now

Shoulder season in October: 13°C days, sea 13°C, fares below average.

Summer is the beach season, with St Dominic's Fair filling the old town's streets for three weeks and Sopot's pier crowded; late spring and September give the same light and a swimmable, if cold, sea with fewer people. Winter is grey and windy but the museums stay open and the hotels are cheap.

Best months here: June, August, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Gdańsk is a Hanseatic port rebuilt from rubble after 1945 into a tall, narrow-fronted Dutch-looking old town, and it carries the start of both the Second World War and the fall of communism within a few kilometres of each other. With Sopot's beach and Gdynia's modernism on the same suburban train line, it suits people who want history and a Baltic swim in one trip.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk Długi Targ and the Motława waterfront, then climb St Mary's tower, the largest brick church in Europe.
  2. 02Spend a morning at the Museum of the Second World War, then the European Solidarity Centre by the shipyard gates.
  3. 03Take the SKM train to Sopot and walk the pier, the longest wooden one on the Baltic.
  4. 04See Westerplatte, where the war began, by boat or bus from the old town.
  5. 05Eat herring and smoked fish on the waterfront, then Goldwasser liqueur in a Mariacka street cellar.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Główne Miasto (Main Town)The rebuilt core with the long market and the Crane; convenient, busy in summer, most hotels.
WrzeszczThe 19th-century district on the train line, with Grass's childhood streets and student bars; local and well connected.
SopotThe beach resort 20 minutes away, with the pier and the Monte Cassino street; lively and expensive in summer.
GdyniaAn interwar modernist port city at the end of the line; museums of emigration and the sea, a quieter base.

Stay in the Main Town for a first visit or Wrzeszcz for value; Sopot if the beach matters and you can take the train in for museums.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Oliwa cathedral's organ recitals, with moving figures on the 18th-century instrument, a short train ride north.
  • ◦Stogi beach on the tram line, wide and pine-backed on the city's eastern edge, emptier than Sopot.
  • ◦The Emigration Museum in Gdynia's old marine station, where transatlantic liners left for New York.
