Bergamo
You can be here in October for about €656, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in October: 18°C days, 13 rainy days, fares below average.
Bergamo's Città Alta is a Sunday-lunch destination for all of Lombardy, so weekends from spring to autumn are crowded from noon; midweek it is calm. On Como the boats run a full timetable only in the warmer months, and the villa gardens close over winter.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Bergamo is two towns: the walled Città Alta on its hill, Venetian ramparts and a lane of pastry shops, and the plain, working Città Bassa below with the station and the banks. Lake Como is an hour away and most people fly into Orio al Serio and go straight there; the ones who stop find a serious food town with polenta and casoncelli and a stationary crowd at the funicular.
What you can do
- 01Ride the funicular to Città Alta, walk Via Gombito to Piazza Vecchia, then the Cappella Colleoni next to the basilica.
- 02Walk the Venetian walls at dusk from Porta San Giacomo to the San Vigilio funicular for the view over the plain.
- 03Eat casoncelli and polenta taragna at a trattoria in Città Alta, then a polenta e osei cake from a pasticceria.
- 04See the Accademia Carrara in the lower town for Lotto, Bellini and Mantegna without a queue.
- 05Take the train to Lecco and the boat up Lake Como to Bellagio and Varenna, returning by rail from Varenna.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Città Alta for atmosphere if you travel light, otherwise in the lower town near the funicular. For Como, sleep in Varenna rather than Bellagio and let the boats do the work.
Unusual things
- ◦The Rocca and the Parco delle Rimembranze at the top of Città Alta, with a small Risorgimento museum and the best terrace.
- ◦Sotto il Monte, the birthplace of Pope John XXIII, a village pilgrimage half an hour west.
- ◦Astino, a restored Benedictine monastery in the valley below the walls, reached on foot through vineyards.
