Why now

Good time in July: 21°C days, 17 rainy days.

Tulip season, King's Day and the summer weekends bring the densest crowds and the highest room rates; the big museums need timed tickets all year, and the Anne Frank House sells out weeks ahead. Late autumn and winter are grey, short-dayed and far more pleasant, with the light festival strung along the canals.

Best months here: May, June, September. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Amsterdam is a merchant city of the 1600s still being lived in: gabled houses tilting over canals, bicycles outnumbering people, and a council that has grown openly tired of the visitors it depends on. The centre is a museum with bars in it; the real city, calmer and more interesting, starts one tram stop out in De Pijp and Oost. It suits walkers and cyclists who book their museums in advance and sleep outside the ring.

What you can do

  1. 01Book the Rijksmuseum for opening time and go straight to the Gallery of Honour before the Night Watch crowd forms.
  2. 02Get Anne Frank House tickets the Tuesday morning they are released, six weeks ahead; there is no other way in.
  3. 03Walk the Jordaan's side canals from Egelantiersgracht to Brouwersgracht and look into the hofjes courtyards whose doors stand open.
  4. 04Take the free ferry behind Centraal to Buiksloterweg or NDSM for the Eye Filmmuseum and the view back.
  5. 05Eat raw herring with onions standing at a stall, then an Indonesian rijsttafel in De Pijp in the evening.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

JordaanNarrow canals, brown cafés, the Saturday market on Noordermarkt; the prettiest and dearest base, quiet by eleven.
De PijpAlbert Cuyp market, Surinamese and Indonesian kitchens, students and young families; ten minutes by tram to Museumplein.
OostOosterpark, the Dappermarkt, the Wereldmuseum and cheaper rooms on the metro; good for stays longer than a weekend.
NoordFormer shipyards reached by free ferry, studios and cafés on the NDSM wharf; better for a flat than a hotel.

Stay in the Jordaan or De Pijp for a first visit, in Oost for better value and a longer stay. Avoid the hotels around Centraal, Damrak and the red-light streets, where the rooms are poorest and the nights loudest.

Unusual things

  • ◦Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder, a complete seventeenth-century Catholic church hidden in the attic of a canal house in the red-light district.
  • ◦Het Schip in the Spaarndammerbuurt, an Amsterdam School workers' housing block with a museum flat and a post office inside.
  • ◦The Portuguese Synagogue in the old Jewish quarter, still without electricity and lit by candles for services and concerts.

Day trips

HaarlemTrain from Centraal, 15 minutes, several an hour — A calmer Grote Markt, the Frans Hals Museum and the Teylers, an Enlightenment museum kept as it was.
UtrechtTrain from Centraal, about 30 minutes — The Dom tower, the wharf cellars along the Oudegracht and the Rietveld Schröder House, booked ahead.
Zaanse SchansTrain to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans, 17 minutes, then a 15-minute walk — Working windmills along the river; go at opening, because by mid-morning it is coaches.

Good to know

Cyclists have priority and move quickly; look both ways before stepping off a pavement and never stand in the red-paved lanes.
