Sofia
You can be here in September for about €1,044, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in September: 25°C days.
The city works all year; Vitosha's walking season starts in late spring and its lifts turn in winter, so Sofia serves both. Rila Monastery and the mountain roads are best outside the July and August heat, when Sofians themselves leave for the Black Sea.
Best months here: February, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Sofia is a low, grey-and-ochre capital with a 2,300-metre mountain at the end of its boulevards, Roman streets under its metro stations and mineral water running from public taps. It is less pretty than Plovdiv and less grand than Bucharest, and its pleasures are ordinary ones: long lunches, parks, a bus up to the hills. It suits people who prefer a city in progress to a set piece.
What you can do
- 01Walk from the Roman streets of Serdica under the Largo to the Rotunda of St George, then Alexander Nevsky's crypt of icons.
- 02Fill a bottle at the hot mineral taps beside the Central Baths, then eat banitsa with boza for breakfast.
- 03Ride a bus up to Dragalevtsi for Vitosha: the chairlift when running, the Golden Bridges stone river, Cherni Vrah for the fit.
- 04See Boyana Church's 1259 frescoes, admitted in small groups for a few minutes, and the National History Museum nearby.
- 05Eat a long Bulgarian dinner: shopska salad, kavarma in a clay pot, grilled kebapche, a Mavrud red from Thrace.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay between Vitosha Boulevard and Alexander Nevsky, or in Oborishte for quiet; avoid the conference hotels along Tsarigradsko Shose, which are far from anything walkable.
Unusual things
- ◦The Museum of Socialist Art in Iztok: a garden of removed Lenins and Dimitrovs, with the red star that once topped the Party House.
- ◦The Red Flat, an apartment reconstructed as a 1980s family home where visitors are meant to open the drawers and sit on the sofa.
- ◦Kambanite, the 1979 Banner of Peace monument in the south-eastern suburbs, hung with bells sent from over a hundred countries.

Good to know
Taxi overcharging by look-alike companies is the standard scam; use an app or check the tariff sticker on the window before getting in.
