Punta Cana
You can be here in August for about €1,160, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in August: 30°C days, 23 rainy days, sea 29°C, peak fares.
Outside the winter peak the resorts are quieter and the sea is warmer, but late summer and early autumn bring sargassum seaweed on the east-facing beaches and the hurricane season. Spring and early summer are the balance most people want.
Best months here: February, March, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Punta Cana is not a town but a strip of all-inclusive resorts along thirty kilometres of coconut-lined beach at the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic. It suits people who want a week of sea, sun and a pool bar with everything arranged; anyone looking for a walkable centre or local street life should base elsewhere in the country.
What you can do
- 01Swim at Playa Bávaro in the morning, when the reef keeps the water calm and the beach vendors are still setting up.
- 02Take the Hoyo Azul cenote walk at Scape Park, a sinkhole of cold blue water under a limestone cliff.
- 03Snorkel or dive the reef off Cabeza de Toro, calmer than the open Atlantic side.
- 04Drive up to Higüey to see the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, the country's main pilgrimage church.
- 05Eat at a comedor on the road to El Cortecito: mangú, fried fish and a Presidente, away from the buffets.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Bávaro is the default and sensible choice for a first visit, close to the airport and with the calmest beach; check whether a resort faces the open Atlantic, where flags often go red.
Unusual things
- ◦Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve, a private forest of freshwater lagoons you can swim in, ten minutes from the airport.
- ◦The Manatí Park area's road inland to Verón, where the resort staff live and the colmados sell food at local pace.
- ◦Playa Macao to the north, a public surf beach with fish shacks and no hotel behind it.
