Greenland
You can be here in December for about €2,365, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in December: -3°C days, 14 rainy days, snow season.
The season is short: the fjord boats, whale-watching and hiking run in the light months, while winter brings northern lights, dog-sled trips further north and closures in town. The new airport has made direct flights possible, so summer accommodation goes early.
Best months here: January, March, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — 64.18°, -51.72°, near Nuuk. Somewhere else in Greenland the numbers will differ.
The place

Nuuk is a capital of about 19,000 people on a fjord, with a Danish-built centre, a Greenlandic soul, and no roads to anywhere else. Greenland is huge and this is a small window on it; the trip suits people who want boats, silence and a real town rather than a wilderness resort.
What you can do
- 01Take a boat into Nuuk Fjord to the abandoned settlement of Kangeq and the Qooqqut valley, watching for humpbacks on the way.
- 02See the Greenland National Museum's Qilakitsoq mummies and the kayaks, then walk the old Colonial Harbour below Hans Egede's house.
- 03Walk up Quassussuaq (Lille Malene) behind the university for the view over the fjord and Sermitsiaq.
- 04Eat musk ox or halibut at Sarfalik or the Katuaq cultural centre café, and try mattak if it is offered.
- 05Browse the Kalaaliaraq market by the harbour for whale, seal and fish sold straight from the boats.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the centre near the Colonial Harbour and the Katuaq centre; rooms are few and expensive relative to anywhere in Europe, so book before flights. Avoid Qinngorput unless you have a car.
Unusual things
- ◦Nuuk Art Museum, a private collection in a former church with Emanuel A. Petersen's Greenland paintings.
- ◦The Sunday service in Greenlandic at the red Church of Our Saviour, with the harbour just outside.
- ◦The Nuuk Local Museum in the old Nuup Bussii depot area, small and staffed by people who remember the town before the blocks.
