Why now

Prime time in January: 26°C days, sea 22°C.

Autumn is the settled season, with mild days and fewer crowds; the southern summer brings the Australian Open and sudden heat, and winter is cold, wet and full of theatre. Big sporting weekends, the Grand Prix and the AFL finals fill hotels.

Best months here: January, February, March. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Melbourne is a flat grid city on a grey bay that decided, in the absence of a harbour, to be good at coffee, laneways, football and art. It suits people who prefer neighbourhoods to landmarks and who can accept four seasons in an afternoon; the weather is the honest caveat.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk the laneways from Degraves Street to Hosier Lane, stopping for a flat white in any doorway café.
  2. 02Watch an AFL match at the MCG in winter, or take the ground's tour and the Australian Sports Museum.
  3. 03Eat at the Queen Victoria Market in the morning, then a Vietnamese lunch on Victoria Street, Richmond.
  4. 04See the NGV International on St Kilda Road, then walk the river to Southbank.
  5. 05Ride the 96 tram to St Kilda for the pier's penguins at dusk and cake on Acland Street.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

CBDThe grid of laneways, arcades and rooftop bars; convenient, lively at night, good for a first visit.
Fitzroy and CollingwoodBrunswick and Smith streets: bars, record shops, restaurants in old warehouses; a short tram ride north.
St KildaBayside, faded seaside grandeur, Luna Park and cake shops; twenty minutes by tram from the centre.
CarltonLygon Street's Italian restaurants, the university and the Exhibition Building gardens; quiet, walkable.

The CBD for a first visit, Fitzroy for evenings, St Kilda for the bay; avoid Docklands, which is quiet and far from anything.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Abbotsford Convent, a former convent complex on the Yarra with studios, a bakery and the Collingwood Children's Farm next door.
  • ◦Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen, the Reeds' house and garden where Sidney Nolan painted the Ned Kelly series.
  • ◦The State Library's La Trobe Reading Room, an octagonal domed room free to enter and rarely full.

Mornington PeninsulaCar, about 1.5 hours south — Bay and ocean beaches, hot springs at Fingal, and the Point Nepean forts.
