Why now

Good time in February: 27°C days, 22 rainy days.

The flower fair in late summer brings the silleteros parade and full hotels, and the Christmas lighting along the river does the same in December; both are worth seeing if you accept the crowds. Weekends send the whole city to Guatapé, so do the day trips midweek and keep the city for Saturday and Sunday.

Best months here: January, September, December. February is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Medellín fills a narrow valley at 1,500 metres with brick towers and a metro that the city treats as a civic achievement, which it is. The climate is mild all year, the people are proud and talkative, and the story it tells about itself, from cartel capital to model city, is half true and worth hearing from residents rather than tour scripts. It suits people who like watching a city work more than sightseeing.

What you can do

  1. 01Ride Metro Line A north, change to the Metrocable at Acevedo and continue past Santo Domingo up to Parque Arví's pine forest.
  2. 02Stand among the twenty-three Botero bronzes on Plaza Botero, then see his early work inside the Museo de Antioquia.
  3. 03Eat a bandeja paisa at lunch, not dinner: beans, rice, chicharrón, chorizo, egg, avocado and a fried plantain.
  4. 04Take the Comuna 13 escalators with a guide from the neighbourhood, mid-morning before the coaches arrive.
  5. 05Walk Laureles on a weekday evening for bakeries, cafés and the bars along Carrera 70 by the stadium.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

LaurelesA flat grid of tree-lined streets with cafés and neighbourhood bars, on Metro Line B; the better base for a first visit.
El PobladoLeafy hills of hostels, hotels and remote workers around Parque Lleras; convenient, steep and loud at night.
EnvigadoA separate municipality south of Poblado with a real town centre and long lunches; quiet, on Line A.
CentroBotero, the markets and the city's commerce, chaotic and interesting by day; leave before dark.

Stay in Laureles for a calmer, more local base with the metro close by; El Poblado has the widest choice of hotels but its hills and nightlife wear thin. Nowhere in Centro for sleeping.

Unusual things

  • ◦Museo Cementerio San Pedro, a working cemetery of marble tombs turned museum, with evening tours on full-moon nights.
  • ◦Salón Málaga in Centro, a bar of old tango and bolero records unchanged since the 1950s, best on a slow afternoon.
  • ◦Otraparte in Envigado, the house of the philosopher Fernando González, now a garden café and small museum.

Day trips

Guatapé and El PeñolBus from Terminal del Norte, about 2 hours — Climb the 740 steps of the granite monolith, then walk the painted zócalos of the town; go midweek.
Santa Fe de AntioquiaBus, about 1 hour 30 minutes through the tunnel — The hot colonial former capital on the Cauca, with the 19th-century Puente de Occidente suspension bridge nearby.
JardínBus, 3 to 4 hours — A coffee town of painted balconies and a huge plaza of café chairs; the ride is long enough to stay the night.

Good to know

Drink spiking linked to dating-app meetings has been a documented problem in El Poblado; keep drinks in sight, and keep phones in pockets in Centro.
