Cagliari
You can be here in October for about €1,298, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in October: 24°C days, sea 23°C, fares below average.
The city works from spring through autumn; the sea at Poetto is swimmable into October, and the August exodus empties the centre rather than filling it. Sant'Efisio's procession in spring brings costumed groups from across the island for a day and fills every room.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Cagliari is a Sardinian port capital of stacked limestone quarters, a long city beach at Poetto and flamingos in the salt lagoons on the way to the airport. It suits people who want a real city with a beach attached rather than a resort, and who accept that the island's famous coast is a drive away.
What you can do
- 01Climb through Castello to the Bastione di Saint Remy and the Torre dell'Elefante for the view over the lagoons.
- 02See the Nuragic bronzetti and the Giants of Mont'e Prama in the Archaeological Museum at the Cittadella dei Musei.
- 03Take bus PF or PQ to Poetto and walk the beach towards Marina Piccola under the Sella del Diavolo.
- 04Eat fregola with clams and spaghetti with bottarga in the lanes of the Marina district behind Via Roma.
- 05Visit the Roman amphitheatre cut into the hillside, then the San Benedetto covered market for its fish hall.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Marina or on the edge of Castello for a first visit; the Poetto seafront is convenient for the beach but dead out of season.
Unusual things
- ◦The Molentargius salt lagoons behind Poetto, where flamingos nest within sight of the city's tower blocks.
- ◦The Necropolis of Tuvixeddu, a Punic burial hill above Viale Sant'Avendrace with hundreds of rock-cut tombs.
- ◦The Sella del Diavolo headland walk from Calamosca, an hour's loop with the whole gulf below.
