Why now
Shoulder season in October: 11°C days, 16 rainy days, fares below average.
Summer brings the terraces, the Jūrmala beach trains and the midsummer Līgo weekend when the city empties for the countryside; winter is dark and slushy but the opera season and the Christmas market carry it. The shoulder seasons are quiet and hotels are easy.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Riga is a Hanseatic port with the largest concentration of Art Nouveau facades in Europe, a Soviet-era overlay it has not fully shaken off, and a central market housed in five Zeppelin hangars. The old town is compact and can tip into stag-party territory on weekends; the streets north of it are where the city actually lives. It suits people who like architecture, markets and cheap good food more than polish.
What you can do
- 01Walk Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela for Eisenstein's Art Nouveau facades, then the museum in one of his apartments.
- 02Eat at the Central Market's hangars, with smoked fish, rye bread and a sit-down lunch in the gastro hall.
- 03Climb St Peter's church tower for the roofline and the river, then see the House of the Blackheads.
- 04Take the train to Jūrmala's Majori station and walk the beach and the wooden villas, about 30 minutes.
- 05Spend an evening in Miera iela's cafés and the Tallinas street quarter, well away from the old town's bars.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Quiet Centre for a first visit; the old town is fine midweek but avoid rooms above bars on Friday and Saturday.
