Kraków
You can be here in October for about €565, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in October: 15°C days, fares below average.
Summer and long weekends bring the largest crowds to the square and the Wieliczka mine, and the Jewish Culture Festival fills Kazimierz in early summer; late autumn and winter are cold, sometimes smoggy, and much quieter. Spring is the reasonable compromise.
Best months here: May, June, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Kraków is the old royal capital that the war left standing, and it wears its history at every scale: the Market Square, the Wawel castle, the Kazimierz Jewish quarter, and the Auschwitz trips that most visitors make from here. It is also a university city of cheap bars and milk-bar lunches, and suits people who want both the weight and the ease.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Market Square at dawn, then the Cloth Hall's underground museum and St Mary's altarpiece at noon.
- 02See Wawel's cathedral and the royal chambers, then the Vistula boulevards down to Kazimierz.
- 03Spend an evening in Kazimierz's bars around plac Nowy, with a zapiekanka from the roundhouse.
- 04Visit Schindler's factory museum in Podgórze and the ghetto's Eagle Pharmacy across the river.
- 05Eat pierogi at a milk bar, then obwarzanek from a street cart, both still cheap and everywhere.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Kazimierz for a first visit or the quieter edges of the Old Town inside the Planty; Podgórze if you want value and calm.
Unusual things
- ◦Nowa Huta's Plac Centralny and the Arka Pana church, a Stalinist grid with a guided walk through the Cold War.
- ◦The Kościuszko and Piłsudski mounds, artificial hills on the western edge with views over the whole city.
- ◦The Ethnographic Museum in Kazimierz's old town hall, Polish folk interiors and painted costumes.
