São Paulo
You can be here in August for about €1,604, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in August: 24°C days, peak fares.
The city runs year-round, but the southern winter is dry and mild and the summer brings daily downpours that flood roads. Big events at the Bienal pavilion and the Formula 1 weekend fill hotels, and Sundays are the day the Paulista is closed to cars.
Best months here: May, June, September. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

São Paulo is an enormous working city with no beach and no obvious postcard, which is why its restaurants, galleries and music matter so much. It suits people who like eating well, walking dense streets and finding a city on its own terms; those who need a view or a centrepiece will find it hard to love in three days.
What you can do
- 01Walk Avenida Paulista on a Sunday, when it closes to traffic, and go into MASP for the glass-easel collection.
- 02Eat at the Mercado Municipal: a mortadella sandwich, a pastel de bacalhau, fruit stalls upstairs.
- 03Spend an afternoon in Ibirapuera Park for the Niemeyer buildings, the Museu Afro Brasil and the MAM.
- 04See the Pinacoteca in Luz, then the Estação da Luz and the Portuguese language museum next door.
- 05Eat Japanese food in Liberdade on a weekend, when the street market fills Praça da Liberdade.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Jardins for a first visit, Vila Madalena or Pinheiros for evenings; avoid the Centro and Luz at night, and anything far from a metro line.
Unusual things
- ◦The Edifício Copan by Niemeyer, whose curving ground floor of shops and cafés is open to anyone to wander.
- ◦Casa de Vidro in Morumbi, Lina Bo Bardi's glass house on stilts in a garden, open by booking.
- ◦The Instituto Moreira Salles on the Paulista, a photography and music archive with a rooftop café.
