Salzburg
You can be here in October for about €899, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in October: 17°C days, fares below average.
The summer festival fills the town with opera-goers and pushes hotel prices up for about six weeks; late spring and early autumn give the same streets with a fraction of the crowds. Advent brings the Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and full hotels again.
Best months here: February, June, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Salzburg is a baroque prince-archbishops' town squeezed between the Salzach and two rock outcrops, and it lives off Mozart and The Sound of Music with a professionalism that can grate. The old town is small enough to see in a day; the point of staying longer is the lakes and mountains within an hour.
What you can do
- 01Climb or take the funicular to the Hohensalzburg fortress, then walk down through Nonnberg abbey and the Kaiviertel.
- 02Walk the Mönchsberg from the Museum der Moderne to Augustiner Bräu in Mülln and drink beer from a stone mug in the garden.
- 03Visit the Residenz and DomQuartier for the state rooms and the cathedral terrace in one ticket.
- 04Cross the river to Mirabell gardens and Steingasse, the medieval lane on the right bank.
- 05Hear a concert at the Mozarteum or the fortress rather than a costumed 'dinner show'.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay on the right bank around Linzer Gasse for value and walking distance; the left-bank Altstadt is lovely but the rooms are small and expensive.
Unusual things
- ◦The Petersfriedhof catacombs, cut into the Mönchsberg rock above the cemetery of St Peter's abbey.
- ◦The Wasserspiele at Hellbrunn, a 17th-century archbishop's trick-fountain garden that still soaks visitors on purpose.
- ◦Untersberg cable car from St Leonhard, 25 minutes by bus, for the plateau on the German border and Berchtesgaden across the way.
