Marrakech
You can be here in April for about €592, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in April: 29°C days.
Spring and autumn are what the city was built for: warm days, cool evenings on the roof terraces, and enough people to make the square feel alive without the school-holiday crush. Summer is genuinely hot and the medina slows down; Ramadan brings quiet daytime streets and lively nights, worth knowing before you book.
Best months here: January, October, November. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Marrakech is a walled medina of dead-end lanes and courtyard houses with a French-built new town beside it, and the two need each other: the medina for the souks and riads, Gueliz for a glass of wine and a normal pavement. It suits people who enjoy being disoriented for a few days and can shrug off the hustle around Jemaa el-Fna. The 2023 earthquake left cracks in the old walls and some repairs are still visible.
What you can do
- 01Walk the souks north of Jemaa el-Fna early, before the tour groups, then return for the food stalls at dusk.
- 02See the Ben Youssef Madrasa's carved cedar and zellige, reopened after a long restoration, then the Almoravid Koubba next door.
- 03Book a timed slot for Jardin Majorelle and go at opening; the Yves Saint Laurent museum is next door.
- 04Eat mechoui in Mechoui Alley at lunch, and order a tanjia, lamb slow-cooked in a clay urn, one evening.
- 05Spend a late afternoon at El Badi Palace's ruined walls and storks, then the Saadian Tombs before they close.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in a riad inside the medina for a first visit, ideally near Mouassine or the Kasbah so you can find your way home, and ask the riad to send someone to meet you, since taxis stop at the gates. The Palmeraie resorts are a taxi ride from everything.
Unusual things
- ◦Sidi Ghanem, the industrial zone north of town where the city's designers, potters and furniture makers keep their showrooms.
- ◦The Maison de la Photographie in the northern medina, a century of photographs of Morocco and a roof café for lunch.
- ◦Musée Tiskiwin near the Bahia Palace, Bert Flint's collection of Saharan crafts arranged as a journey from Marrakech to Timbuktu.

Good to know
Unofficial guides who steer you towards the tanneries or a relative's shop are the main annoyance; a firm no and walking on works, and henna women on the square may start painting before you agree.
