Luxor
You can be here in February for about €569, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in February: 24°C days, dry.
Winter is the season and the crowds follow it; spring and autumn give warm days and thinner queues at the tombs, while summer is a matter of dawn starts and a siesta. Tombs open on rotation to limit humidity, so the list of what is open changes.
Best months here: January, February, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Luxor is ancient Thebes with a provincial Egyptian town laid over it: Karnak and Luxor Temple on the east bank, the tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the mortuary temples across the Nile on the west. The density of what survives is hard to take in over two days, and the hassle on the Corniche is real. It suits people who read before they travel and get up before the light.
What you can do
- 01Walk Karnak's Hypostyle Hall at opening time, when the columns have shade and the coaches have not arrived.
- 02Cross to the west bank for the Valley of the Kings; add Seti I or Nefertari's tomb if your budget allows.
- 03See Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahari and the workers' village and painted tombs at Deir el-Medina.
- 04Visit Luxor Temple after dark, when it is lit and the Avenue of Sphinxes stretches back toward Karnak.
- 05Spend an hour in the Luxor Museum, small and well lit, for the Karnak cachette statues.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay on the west bank in a small guesthouse for quiet and early access to the tombs; the east bank Corniche hotels are for those who want the Nile view and a pool.
Unusual things
- ◦Medinet Habu, Ramesses III's mortuary temple with reliefs still holding their paint and a fraction of the visitors of the Valley.
- ◦The Tombs of the Nobles at Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, where scenes of daily life replace the royal underworld.
- ◦The early morning balloon over the west bank, a real view of the Theban necropolis in one frame, weather permitting.

Good to know
Luxor is on the main tourist route and generally calm, but caleche drivers, boatmen and ticket-office helpers can be relentless; a firm no and a pre-agreed fare solve most of it.
