İzmir
You can be here in October for about €388, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 25°C days, dry, sea 22°C, fares below average.
Go outside high summer if Ephesus matters: the site has almost no shade and fills with cruise-ship groups from Kuşadası by mid-morning. Autumn brings the Urla grape harvest and a calmer Alaçatı; the city itself works in any month.
Best months here: May, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

İzmir is a working Aegean port that happens to have Ephesus down the railway line: secular, seaward, unbothered by tourism, with a long waterfront where the evening is spent on the grass with a beer and a bag of sunflower seeds. It suits people who want a real city with a bazaar and a bay, then a day among Roman ruins, rather than a resort.
What you can do
- 01Walk Ephesus early, from the upper gate downhill to the Library of Celsus; pay extra for the Terrace Houses.
- 02Get lost in Kemeraltı bazaar, then drink Turkish coffee in the courtyard of Kızlarağası Han.
- 03Eat boyoz and a boiled egg for breakfast, İzmir köfte for lunch, midye dolma on the Kordon at dusk.
- 04Ride the Asansör in Karataş, a 1907 public lift, and walk Dario Moreno Street below it.
- 05Take the ferry from Konak to Karşıyaka at sunset and come back for dinner in Alsancak.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Alsancak for a first visit, within walking distance of the Kordon and the ferries; the hotels around the Basmane station are cheap but tired. Add a night in Selçuk if Ephesus is the point of the trip.
Unusual things
- ◦Havra Sokağı in Kemeraltı, a street of old Sephardic synagogues being restored one by one, some open to visitors.
- ◦Sığacık, a walled fishing village near Seferihisar with a Sunday producers' market and the ruins of Teos nearby.
- ◦The Gediz Delta bird reserve at Çiğli, where flamingos feed in the salt pans within sight of the city's outskirts.
