Cologne
You can be here in July for about €829, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in July: 24°C days, 16 rainy days.
Carnival, from the Thursday before Lent through Rose Monday, is the event; rooms go early and the city is one long street party, wonderful or unbearable depending on taste. Spring and early autumn are the walking months, and the Christmas market at the cathedral is one of the larger ones in Germany.
Best months here: May, June, September. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Cologne is a Roman city on the Rhine that was flattened in the war and rebuilt in a hurry, so the cathedral's twin spires stand over a centre that is more useful than beautiful. What it has is a temperament: Kölsch beer in small glasses, a carnival that shuts the city for a week, and a museum quarter beside the river. It suits people who prefer a friendly city with a few great things to a pretty one with many.
What you can do
- 01Climb the 533 steps of the cathedral's south tower, then see the Gerhard Richter window inside.
- 02Visit the Museum Ludwig for its Picassos and Pop art, next to the Roman-Germanic Museum's mosaics.
- 03Drink Kölsch in a brewery house like Päffgen or Früh, served until you put your beer mat on the glass.
- 04Cross the Hohenzollern bridge past the padlocks to the Deutz bank for the view back at dusk.
- 05Walk the Belgian Quarter's streets around the Brüsseler Platz for shops, bars and Sunday evenings outside.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Belgian Quarter, the Südstadt or Ehrenfeld; the Altstadt around the cathedral is loud with stag groups on weekends.
Unusual things
- ◦The Kolumba museum, Peter Zumthor's brick building over a bombed church and Roman remains, with religious art.
- ◦The Praetorium and the Roman sewer under the town hall, walkable in a stretch below the streets.
- ◦The Chocolate Museum on the Rheinauhafen, with a working production line and a fountain at the end.
