Why now

Prime time in November: 20°C days, dry, sea 21°C, fares below average.

April to early June and late September to October keep the light and the swimming while the cruise-ship counts fall and the Fira to Oia path is walkable in the middle of the day. In July and August Oia's sunset is a queue and the caldera towns are full from morning to night.

Best months here: September, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Santorini is the rim of a drowned volcano with white villages along the cliff edge, and the view is exactly as advertised; the problem is that two million people a year come to look at it. It suits couples who want the caldera at sunrise from a terrace, people who will walk the rim path and eat in the villages away from Oia, and nobody looking for a beach holiday or a quiet one.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk the rim path from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia, about three hours, early.
  2. 02See Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town buried by the eruption, with its frescoes at the Fira museum.
  3. 03Take the caldera boat to Nea Kameni's crater and swim in the warm springs at Palea Kameni.
  4. 04Eat tomato fritters and fava at a taverna in Megalochori or Pyrgos, not on the cliff.
  5. 05Visit a winery for assyrtiko from basket-trained vines, then drive to the lighthouse at Akrotiri for dusk.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

OiaThe postcard village at the northern tip; cave hotels, galleries, sunset crowds; expensive, quiet only before nine.
Imerovigli and FirostefaniOn the rim between Fira and Oia; the same view, fewer people, walking distance to Fira.
FiraThe capital and transport hub with the museums and the nightlife; convenient, loud, tour-group heavy.
Pyrgos and MegalochoriInland villages with a castle hill and wineries; no caldera view, calm, cheaper, a car needed.

A first visit should stay in Imerovigli or Firostefani for the view without Oia's crowds; the black-sand resorts at Perissa and Kamari are cheaper but a bus ride from the caldera.

Unusual things

  • ◦Pyrgos's Venetian kasteli and the Profitis Ilias monastery above it, the highest point of the island.
  • ◦Emporio's fortified medieval village with a maze of lanes inside the walls, ten minutes from Perissa.
  • ◦The Tomato Industrial Museum at Vlychada, a 1945 canning factory kept with its machines and workers' testimonies.

Day trips

ThirassiaBoat from Ammoudi or Athinios, 15 to 30 minutes — The other side of the caldera, with one village and almost no visitors after the excursion boats leave.
Ancient TheraCar or bus to Kamari, then a steep road or path up Mesa Vouno — Hellenistic and Roman town on a ridge between two beaches; windy, quiet, a morning's walk.
IosFerry, about 40 minutes to 1.5 hours — Sandy beaches and a hilltop chora; a night-life island in summer, calm otherwise.

Getting around
The airport is 15 minutes from Fira by taxi, and taxis are scarce; local buses fan out from Fira to every village but run late and fill in summer. A rented car or scooter is the practical answer, though the rim villages themselves are walked.
