Pescara
You can be here in December for about €331, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in December: 13°C days, sea 13°C.
The beach fills with Italians in the summer school holidays and the mountain refuges open for the same weeks; in spring the high plains are still snowy and in autumn the beech forests turn. The trabocchi coast restaurants run on a seasonal calendar, so check before going in winter.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Pescara is a modern seaside city, mostly rebuilt after wartime bombing, with a long sandy beach, a pedestrian shopping grid and a fish-based nightlife on the river. It matters as the door to Abruzzo: within an hour are the Gran Sasso, hill towns that have lost half their populations, and three national parks with bears. It suits drivers who want mountains and coast in the same week.
What you can do
- 01Eat arrosticini, skewered sheep, at a restaurant on the Pescara river's Marina, with a glass of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
- 02Walk the Ponte del Mare and the seafront north to the pine wood of D'Annunzio's park.
- 03Drive the Costa dei Trabocchi south of Ortona and eat on one of the fishing platforms over the sea.
- 04Go up to Campo Imperatore, the high plain under the Gran Sasso, and the ghost village of Rocca Calascio's castle.
- 05See the Museo delle Genti d'Abruzzo in the old Bourbon prison for the region's shepherding history.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the centre near Corso Umberto or on the seafront if it is a beach trip; for Abruzzo proper, split with a night in Sulmona or a mountain village.
Unusual things
- ◦Santo Stefano di Sessanio, a near-abandoned mountain village restored as a scattered hotel above Campo Imperatore.
- ◦The Eremo di San Bartolomeo in Legio, a hermitage cut into the rock in the Majella, reached on foot.
- ◦Punta Aderci nature reserve near Vasto, a headland and a wild beach with none of the umbrella rows.
