Mykonos
You can be here in July for about €1,244, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in July: 30°C days, dry, sea 24°C.
May, early June and late September to October give an open chora without the summer's clubs, prices and crowds; the sea is warm from late June, and cool but swimmable before that. In July and August the meltemi blows for days, the beaches on the north coast are unusable and the town is full from noon until dawn.
Best months here: July, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Mykonos is a bare, windy Cycladic island that turned itself into a beach-club economy, with a white chora that is still one of the prettiest in the Aegean if you see it before ten in the morning. It suits people who want the south-coast beach scene and expensive nights, and it suits almost no one else in summer; in shoulder season it is a different, quieter, better island.
What you can do
- 01Walk Little Venice and the windmills at dawn, then the Paraportiani church before the shops open.
- 02Take the morning boat to Delos, the sacred island, and stay until the last return.
- 03Swim at Agios Sostis or Fokos on the north coast when the wind allows, with no sunbeds and one taverna.
- 04Eat kopanisti cheese and louza cured pork at a taverna in Ano Mera, the inland village.
- 05Spend a day at a south-coast club beach, Paranga or Elia, if the scene is the point.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A first visit should stay in the chora or at Ornos for the bays and buses; the south-coast beach hotels are for those who intend to use the clubs.
Unusual things
- ◦The Archaeological Museum on the harbour, small and with the 7th-century BC Trojan Horse relief pithos.
- ◦Armenistis lighthouse at the island's northwest point, a 19th-century tower with a view across to Tinos.
- ◦Rhenia, the uninhabited island beside Delos, reached by chartered boat for empty coves and swimming.

- Getting around
- The airport is ten minutes from town by taxi, and taxis are famously few; buses from the two town stations reach the beaches every 30 minutes in summer, and beach boats run along the south coast. A car or ATV is the way to the north coast.
