Dublin
You can be here in October for about €671, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in October: 14°C days, 16 rainy days, fares below average.
Rooms vanish on Six Nations weekends, big-stadium concert nights and the St Patrick's Festival week, and summer fills Temple Bar with stag groups. Autumn has the Theatre Festival and a normal city rhythm; midwinter is dark by four but the pubs are at their best.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Dublin is a small, talkative capital that sells itself on Georgian doors and literature and actually runs on pubs, rugby, tech money and rain. The centre fits in an afternoon's walk; the point is the evening after it, a session in a back room, a conversation with a stranger that lasts longer than planned. It suits people who like company more than sights and can accept that the city is expensive for what it is.
What you can do
- 01Book an early slot for the Book of Kells at Trinity; the Long Room's shelves are half-empty during conservation.
- 02See the bog bodies and Bronze Age gold at the National Museum on Kildare Street, then walk Merrion Square.
- 03Take the Kilmainham Gaol tour, booked ahead, and walk back along the Liffey past the Guinness brewery gates.
- 04Hear a trad session at The Cobblestone in Smithfield on a weeknight, standing, with one drink that lasts.
- 05Take the DART to Howth for the cliff path around the Head and fish on the west pier.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay between St Stephen's Green and the Grand Canal for a first visit, or in Stoneybatter for a cheaper northside base with better pubs. Avoid Temple Bar for sleeping and the far end of O'Connell Street late at night.
Unusual things
- ◦Marsh's Library beside St Patrick's Cathedral, unchanged since the early eighteenth century, with the wire reading cages readers were once locked into.
- ◦Sweny's Pharmacy on Lincoln Place, the chemist from Ulysses, kept open by volunteers who sell lemon soap and hold readings.
- ◦The Casino at Marino, a compact eighteenth-century pleasure house in the northern suburbs whose one-room exterior hides sixteen rooms.

- Getting around
- The centre is walkable; the two Luas tram lines and the coastal DART cover the rest with a Leap card. The airport has no rail link, so the Dublin Express or Aircoach buses take 30 to 45 minutes to the centre depending on traffic.

Good to know
Phone-snatching and pickpocketing are common around O'Connell Street and Temple Bar late in the evening; keep phones out of hand on the street.
