Why now

Good time in December: 22°C days, 15 rainy days, sea 21°C.

The southern summer is the busy season for the whole country, with campervans and full hostels; late spring and early autumn are calmer, with mild weather and open roads. Winter closes some alpine routes but is fine in the north.

Best months here: February, March, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Auckland is a spread-out city on an isthmus between two harbours, with fifty extinct volcanoes for viewpoints and a Polynesian population larger than any Pacific island's. It is where New Zealand trips begin rather than the reason for them; give it two days, then leave for the country that makes people come.

What you can do

  1. 01Climb Maungawhau (Mount Eden) at sunrise for the crater and both harbours.
  2. 02Take the ferry to Waiheke Island for a vineyard lunch and a swim at Onetangi.
  3. 03Walk the west coast at Piha, black sand and surf, forty minutes from the centre.
  4. 04See the Māori and Pacific galleries of the Auckland War Memorial Museum in the Domain.
  5. 05Eat at Ponsonby Central in the evening, or dumplings and Korean fried chicken on Dominion Road.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

PonsonbyVillas, restaurants and bars on Ponsonby Road; the best base for a first visit, walkable to the centre.
City centre and Wynyard QuarterHotels, the ferry terminal and the waterfront; convenient, empty on Sundays.
DevonportA Victorian village across the harbour by twelve-minute ferry; quiet, with two volcanoes to climb.
Queenstown, South IslandThe other end of most itineraries: mountains, adventure sports, flights from Auckland in under two hours.

Ponsonby or the city centre for a first visit; for the rest of the country, a car or campervan and a loop through Rotorua, Wellington and the South Island is the standard plan.

Unusual things

  • ◦Rangitoto Island, a 600-year-old volcano in the harbour, reached by ferry and climbed in an hour on lava trails.
  • ◦The Ōtara Market on Saturday mornings in South Auckland, the city's Pacific food and craft market.
  • ◦The Waitākere Ranges' Kitekite Falls track near Piha, rainforest and a swimming hole, check trail closures for kauri dieback.

Day trips

RotoruaCar or bus, about 3 hours south — Geothermal parks, Māori cultural evenings and the sulphur smell; better as an overnight on the way south.
Coromandel PeninsulaCar, about 2.5 hours — Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, where you dig a pool in the sand at low tide.
HobbitonCar or tour, about 2 hours — The preserved film set near Matamata; booked tours only, crowded, either a pilgrimage or a skip.

Good to know

New Zealand's sun is unusually strong, so cover up even on cool days; the west coast beaches have dangerous rips, and you should swim only where patrolled.
