Quito
You can be here in October for about €798, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in October: 18°C days, 24 rainy days.
Quito's weather is more about the day than the season, with clear mornings and rain by three in most months; the drier mid-year window gives the best volcano views. Galápagos boats are booked months ahead for the peak school-holiday periods, and last-minute deals appear in the quieter months.
Best months here: July, August, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Quito is a long thin capital at 2,850 metres, with a colonial centre that has been restored rather than gutted and a ring of volcanoes visible on clear mornings. It suits people who want history, mountains and markets in a compact loop, and who treat the Galápagos as a separate trip bolted on rather than a day out.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Centro Histórico from Plaza Grande to La Compañía's gold interior and the Basílica towers.
- 02Take the TelefériQo up Pichincha to 3,900 metres and walk toward Rucu Pichincha on a clear morning.
- 03Eat locro de papa and hornado at the Mercado Central, or fritada in a family restaurant.
- 04Spend a day at the Otavalo market on a Saturday, arriving early before the coach groups.
- 05Fly to the Galápagos for at least five days: snorkel with sea lions, walk lava fields, see tortoises on Santa Cruz.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
La Floresta or a restored house in the Centro Histórico for a first visit; skip La Mariscal unless the price matters. For the Galápagos, a cruise sees more than land-based hotels, and Santa Cruz is the best island for the latter.
Unusual things
- ◦The Capilla del Hombre in Bellavista, Oswaldo Guayasamín's monumental chapel to human suffering, next to his house.
- ◦The Mitad del Mundo's Intiñan museum, on the actual equator line rather than the monument's, with its small experiments.
- ◦La Ronda, a restored lane in the old town where guitar makers, chocolatiers and canelazo sellers work from small shops.

Good to know
The altitude affects most arrivals for a day or two, so take the first day slowly; Ecuador has had periods of security-related states of emergency, so check current advisories, particularly for Guayaquil.
