Muscat
You can be here in November for about €1,651, 3 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in November: 30°C days, dry, sea 29°C, fares below average.
October to March is the season for the wadis, the desert and the mountains; summer is punishing on the coast, though Salalah in the far south turns green and cool in the monsoon months. Ramadan quiets the days, and Friday mornings close the souks.
Best months here: January, February, December. November is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Muscat is a low, white capital strung along forty kilometres of coast between the Hajar mountains and the sea, with no skyline to speak of and a rule that buildings stay modest. Oman is the reason to come: wadis with pools, a desert of orange dunes, forts in every town and a courtesy that is not a performance. It suits drivers, hikers and people who found the other Gulf cities too loud.
What you can do
- 01Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the morning, then the Royal Opera House on the same road.
- 02Walk Mutrah's corniche and souk at dusk, then the fish market at dawn the next day.
- 03Drive to Wadi Shab, walk in for 45 minutes and swim through to the cave waterfall.
- 04Spend a night in the Wahiba Sands at a camp, with Bedouin coffee and a dune drive at sunset.
- 05Climb Jebel Shams to the Balcony Walk along Oman's grand canyon, an easy path with a serious drop.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Mutrah or Qurum for the city, then move: a night in Nizwa or on Jebel Akhdar, a night in the desert. Muscat alone underuses the country.
Unusual things
- ◦Bimmah Sinkhole, a limestone pool of turquoise water between Muscat and Sur, swimmable and free.
- ◦Misfat Al Abriyeen, a mud-brick village on terraces above the falaj irrigation channels near Al Hamra.
- ◦The Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve near Sur, where green turtles nest on the beach after dark most of the year.

- Getting around
- A hire car is the honest way to see Oman; roads are good, distances long, and public transport thin outside the Mwasalat city buses. The airport is 30 to 40 minutes from Mutrah by taxi or the airport bus.
