Bhutan
You can be here in October for about €2,708, 4 days, 2 stop.
Why now
Good time in October: 20°C days, 19 rainy days, fares below average.
Spring and autumn are the trekking seasons and the time of the big tsechu festivals in Paro and Thimphu, when hotels fill and flights sell out. Winter is cold, clear and quiet with the valleys still accessible, and the monsoon closes the high passes and hides the peaks.
Best months here: October, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — 27.43°, 89.42°, near Paro. Somewhere else in Bhutan the numbers will differ.
The place

Bhutan is a Himalayan kingdom that limits its visitors on purpose, with a daily sustainable development fee, dzongs that are both fortress and monastery, and a road system where a hundred kilometres takes half a day. It suits people who accept a guided, structured trip and want mountains with a working Buddhist culture rather than a trekking crowd.
What you can do
- 01Walk up to Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, on the cliff above Paro; about three hours round trip.
- 02See Punakha Dzong at the meeting of two rivers, the country's most beautiful fortress, in jacaranda season if lucky.
- 03Cross the Dochula pass with its 108 chortens, for the eastern Himalaya on a clear morning.
- 04Attend a tsechu masked-dance festival in a dzong courtyard, arranged around your dates by the tour operator.
- 05Eat ema datshi, chilli and cheese, at a Thimphu restaurant, and try the archery ground at the weekend.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Visits are arranged through a Bhutanese operator or the government portal, and hotels are chosen with the guide; Paro and Thimphu for a first trip, adding Punakha for three or more nights.
Unusual things
- ◦Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple near Punakha where the phallus paintings on village houses come from.
- ◦The Phobjikha valley, a glacial bowl where black-necked cranes winter around Gangtey monastery.
- ◦Haa valley, west of Paro over the Chele La pass, opened to visitors only in recent decades and still quiet.

Good to know
Altitude on the passes and the Taktsang climb affects some people; the daily fee applies to every night in the country and flights are limited, so book early for festival weeks.
