Trapani
You can be here in October for about €516, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in October: 25°C days, sea 23°C, fares below average.
May, June, September and October are the months: the salt pans are harvested in late summer, the scirocco is less likely than in July, and the sea at Favignana is warm from June. Holy Week's Misteri procession, a night-long carrying of statues through the streets, fills the town.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Trapani is a flat sickle of a town between two seas, with salt pans and windmills to the south, Erice on the mountain above and the Egadi islands half an hour offshore. It suits people who want western Sicily's coast and couscous rather than Baroque cities, and who like a place that has not been tidied up.
What you can do
- 01Take the hydrofoil to Favignana and cycle to Cala Rossa and Bue Marino, then swim off the tuff quarry ledges.
- 02Ride the cable car from Trapani up to Erice for the Norman castle, the cloud-wrapped lanes and Maria Grammatico's almond pastries.
- 03Eat couscous di pesce and busiate with pesto trapanese in the old town lanes, then a cannolo from a bar.
- 04Walk the salt pans road to Nubia's salt museum at dusk, when the pans turn pink under the windmills.
- 05See the Whitaker Museum's marble Youth of Mozia on the island itself, reached by small boat across the Stagnone lagoon.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Trapani's old town near the port for a first visit; sleep in Erice for one night to have it empty, and choose Favignana for a beach week.
Unusual things
- ◦Levanzo's Grotta del Genovese, with Palaeolithic engravings of animals, visited by boat and jeep from the harbour.
- ◦The Florio tuna cannery on Favignana, a vast restored complex that tells the story of the mattanza.
- ◦The Riserva dello Zingaro, a car-free coastal reserve between Scopello and San Vito, walked on a seven-kilometre path between coves.
