Why now

Good time in November: 29°C days, 27 rainy days, sea 29°C, fares below average.

The dry season from roughly December to April is the comfortable window, with trade winds and clear skies; the long green season brings afternoon downpours but lower hotel occupancy and full rivers. Carnival week closes much of the city and sends everyone to the interior.

Best months here: January, February, December. November is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Panama City is a banking skyline on a tropical bay with a restored colonial quarter at one end and the canal at the other, and a rainforest inside the city limits. It suits people who want a comfortable, well-connected base with genuine nature an hour away; the city itself is more pleasant than interesting.

What you can do

  1. 01Watch ships pass the Miraflores Locks from the visitor centre, ideally when a Panamax vessel is scheduled.
  2. 02Walk Casco Viejo's plazas and churches in the late afternoon, then rooftop bars after dark.
  3. 03Take the Cinta Costera to the Mercado de Mariscos for ceviche in a plastic cup.
  4. 04Spend a morning in Parque Natural Metropolitano, a forest with sloths and toucans inside the city.
  5. 05Visit the Biomuseo by Frank Gehry on the Amador Causeway, then cycle the causeway to the islands.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Casco ViejoThe restored colonial quarter: boutique hotels, rooftop bars, plazas; walkable, hot, the natural first-visit base.
El CangrejoMid-century residential district with cheap hotels, restaurants and the Vía Argentina strip; near the metro.
Bella Vista and MarbellaSkyscraper hotels and the financial district along the bay; convenient and characterless.
AmadorThe causeway to the islands; sea breeze, cycling, a few hotels, taxis needed for everything else.

Casco Viejo for atmosphere, El Cangrejo for value and the metro; the skyscraper hotels along the bay are fine but you will be in taxis constantly.

Unusual things

  • ◦Panamá Viejo, the ruined first city sacked by Henry Morgan in 1671, with a climbable cathedral tower.
  • ◦The Rainforest Discovery Center at Pipeline Road near Gamboa, a canopy tower for birdwatching at dawn.
  • ◦The Mola Museum in Casco Viejo, dedicated to the layered textiles of the Guna people.

Day trips

Gamboa and Lake GatúnTaxi or car, about 45 minutes — Boat trips to monkey islands on the canal's lake, and the Soberanía forest trails.
PortobeloCar or bus via Sabanitas, about 2 hours — Spanish forts on the Caribbean coast and the Black Christ church; slow road, worth combining with Isla Grande.
Taboga IslandFerry from the Amador Causeway, about 30 minutes — A village beach island in the bay, busy on weekends, quiet mid-week.

Good to know

Avoid walking through El Chorrillo and Curundú, the districts west and north of Casco Viejo, and treat the green season's afternoon storms as a reason to plan outdoor activities for the morning.
