Why now

Good time in April: 16°C days.

Summer is when the Voyage à Nantes art trail opens its temporary installations and the Machines de l'Île run their full programme; spring and autumn are quieter and the green line on the pavement still leads round the permanent pieces. The Atlantic beaches are within reach only when the weather holds.

Best months here: June, July, September. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Nantes is a former shipbuilding and slave-trade port that has turned itself into a city of public art, bicycles and mechanical elephants without becoming precious about it. The Loire still runs through it, the ducal castle sits in the centre and the old island shipyards are now a park. It suits people who like cities that are working things out, two hours from Paris and forty minutes from the Atlantic.

What you can do

  1. 01Follow the green line painted on the pavement for the Voyage à Nantes trail, a full day on foot.
  2. 02Ride the Grand Éléphant and see the Carrousel des Mondes Marins at the Machines de l'Île.
  3. 03Walk the moat and ramparts of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, then its history museum.
  4. 04Eat crêpes and drink Muscadet in the Bouffay quarter, then coffee in the Passage Pommeraye.
  5. 05Visit the Mémorial de l'abolition de l'esclavage on the Quai de la Fosse, under the riverside.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

BouffayThe medieval core below the castle, bars and crêperies; central, walkable, loud on weekend nights.
GraslinThe 18th-century quarter around the theatre and the Passage Pommeraye; elegant, the first-visit base.
Île de NantesThe former shipyards, the Machines, new architecture and the Hangar à Bananes bars; spread out.
ChantenayA former working district on the hill to the west; local bars, artists' studios, cheaper rooms.

Stay in Graslin or the Bouffay for a first visit; the Île de Nantes is interesting but spread out and quiet at night.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Lieu Unique, a former LU biscuit factory with a tower to climb, a bar and a hammam.
  • ◦The Jardin des Plantes' oversized Claude Ponti installations and its 19th-century greenhouses.
