Madeira
You can be here in October for about €500, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in October: 25°C days, 14 rainy days, fares below average.
The climate is temperate all year, so the calendar matters more than the season: New Year fireworks and the spring flower festival fill Funchal, and the summer brings Portuguese mainland families. Cloud sits on the mountains most afternoons, so levada walks start early whatever the month.
Best months here: July, September, November. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Madeira is a steep volcanic island where the roads go through tunnels and the walks go along irrigation channels, the levadas, that contour the mountains for hundreds of kilometres. Funchal has a mild, old-fashioned resort air, wicker toboggans and afternoon tea included, while the north coast is wet, green and much quieter. It suits walkers and people who want a warm winter without a beach, since sand is scarce and the sea is reached by ladders and lidos.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Levada das 25 Fontes from Rabaçal, three hours return, with a bus or car to the start.
- 02Ride the cable car from Funchal to Monte, see the botanic garden, come down by wicker toboggan if you must.
- 03Watch the sunrise from Pico do Arieiro, then walk the ridge towards Pico Ruivo if the path is open.
- 04Eat espetada and bolo do caco at a churrascaria in Câmara de Lobos, then drink a poncha.
- 05Swim in the natural lava pools at Porto Moniz on the north-west corner.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Funchal is the right base for a first visit without a car; with one, the south-west coast near Calheta gives more sun. Avoid the isolated cliff-top hotels unless driving mountain roads at night appeals.
Unusual things
- ◦The Fanal forest on the Paul da Serra plateau, ancient laurel trees in fog, a short walk from the road.
- ◦The whale and dolphin museum at Caniçal, in the old whaling station on the eastern tip.
- ◦São Vicente's volcanic caves and the Cristo Rei statue at Garajau, which has a cable car down to a black pebble beach.

- Getting around
- Hire a car for the levadas and the north; Funchal's buses reach most trailheads but slowly. The airport is 20 minutes east of Funchal by the Aerobus or taxi, and its cross-wind landings are famous for a reason.

Good to know
Levada paths can close after storms and some mountain trails require a free permit or a booked slot; check the Madeira walking site before setting out.
