Why now

Good time in October: 18°C days, fares below average.

Late spring and early autumn are the walking seasons, with the Open Kitchen food market on Fridays and the riverside terraces open; summer brings heat in the city and full car parks at Bled. Winter is quiet, foggy in the basin, and the ski areas above Bled open.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Ljubljana is a capital of under 300,000 people with a car-free riverside centre that Jože Plečnik reshaped in the 1920s and 30s: bridges, colonnades, a market and a library, all still in use. Bled's lake and island church are an hour away, and the two together suit people who want a small city and alpine water without the machinery of a big resort.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk Plečnik's route from the Triple Bridge past the market colonnade to the National and University Library.
  2. 02Take the funicular up to the castle for the view, then walk down through the vineyard on the far side.
  3. 03Eat at the Friday Open Kitchen market on Pogačarjev trg, the city's weekly outdoor food event in season.
  4. 04Row to Bled island or walk the six-kilometre lake path, then eat the cream cake at the Park hotel.
  5. 05Visit Metelkova, the squatted former barracks of murals and clubs beside the museums quarter.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Center (Old Town)The riverside between the castle hill and the Ljubljanica; walkable, calm, most hotels.
Trnovo and KrakovoOld gardeners' quarters south of the centre, Plečnik's house among them; residential and ten minutes on foot.
BledThe lake town, with hotels ringing the water; busy in summer, a base for Triglav walks.
BohinjThe quieter, larger lake beyond Bled, with cabins and the Vogel cable car; better for hikers.

Stay in the Center for a first visit; a night at Bled or Bohinj is worth adding rather than doing the lakes as a day trip in summer.

Unusual things

  • ◦Plečnik's house in Trnovo, kept as he left it, with the round tower and his drawings, closed Mondays.
  • ◦Vintgar gorge near Bled, a 1.6-kilometre wooden walkway over the Radovna river, one-way in season.
  • ◦Žale cemetery on the northern edge, Plečnik's colonnaded entrance and chapels, still in use.

Day trips

Lake BledBus, about 1 hour 15 minutes, roughly hourly — The island church, the castle above and the lake walk; crowded midday in summer.
Postojna cave and Predjama castleBus or train, about an hour, then shuttle — An underground train into the cave and a castle built into a cliff mouth; a combined ticket exists.
Škocjan cavesTrain to Divača, about 1 hour 30 minutes, then a walk or shuttle — The UNESCO gorge cave with a bridge across a 140-metre chasm; less commercial than Postojna.
