Why now

Shoulder season in July: 32°C days, 17 rainy days.

Cherry blossom weeks fill the Tidal Basin and every hotel in early spring; autumn gives the same walking weather with fewer school groups. The city runs on the federal calendar, so inaugurations and big demonstrations close streets, and a government shutdown closes all the Smithsonian museums at once.

Best months here: April, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Washington is a planned capital that also works as a city: the monumental core of the Mall, museums that charge nothing, and beyond them a grid of row-house neighbourhoods where people actually live and eat, from Shaw to Capitol Hill. It suits walkers and museum-goers with stamina; the distances on the Mall are longer than the map suggests, and the summer humidity is not a rumour.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk the Mall from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, about two miles; the memorials are at their best at dusk.
  2. 02Pick two Smithsonian museums a day, not five; the National Museum of African American History and Culture needs timed passes.
  3. 03Eat Ethiopian around U Street and Shaw, injera shared from one platter, then a half-smoke at Ben's Chili Bowl.
  4. 04Visit the Library of Congress's Jefferson Building and the Capitol; book the Capitol tour ahead and use the tunnel between them.
  5. 05Spend an afternoon in Georgetown: the C&O Canal towpath, the Dumbarton Oaks gardens, and the Exorcist steps if you must.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Dupont CircleEmbassies, bookshops and a Sunday farmers' market on the Red Line; the classic central base for a first visit.
Capitol Hill and Eastern MarketRow houses behind the Capitol, weekend stalls at Eastern Market and the bars of Barracks Row; quiet at night, walkable to the Mall.
Shaw and U StreetThe old Black Broadway, now the restaurant and bar district around 14th and U; lively late, on the Green Line.
Navy YardNew towers on the Anacostia by Nationals Park; clean and a little sterile, good for baseball and the riverwalk.

Stay near a Red or Green Line station, Dupont Circle, Logan Circle or Capitol Hill, for a first visit. Rooms around Federal Triangle are convenient by day and dead after office hours; Crystal City in Virginia is cheaper but a commute.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Brookland, with replica catacombs and rose gardens, a short walk from the Red Line.
  • ◦Congressional Cemetery on Capitol Hill, where J. Edgar Hoover and John Philip Sousa lie and neighbours pay a subscription to walk their dogs.
  • ◦Glenstone in Potomac, Maryland, a private museum of postwar art set in meadows; free but reserved, about 40 minutes by car.

Day trips

Mount VernonMetro to Huntington then Fairfax Connector bus 101, about an hour; or by bike along the Potomac trail — Washington's plantation house; the exhibits on the enslaved people and the trades are the honest part.
AnnapolisCar, about an hour; commuter buses on weekdays — Colonial harbour town and the Naval Academy (bring photo ID for the gate); crab cakes and sailing on the Severn.
Harpers FerryMARC train from Union Station on weekdays, about 80 minutes; Amtrak daily — Where the Shenandoah meets the Potomac: John Brown's raid, the Appalachian Trail crossing, and a climb up Maryland Heights.

Good to know

A federal government shutdown closes every Smithsonian museum and the National Zoo without much warning, so glance at the news before a museum-led trip.
