Vancouver
You can be here in January for about €1,039, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in January: 6°C days, 16 rainy days, sea 7°C, snow season.
Summer is dry and long-lit and everything outdoors works, but it is also when the cruise ships and the highest hotel rates arrive; September is drier than people expect and quieter. From November to March it rains most days downtown while the local mountains ski.
Best months here: July, August, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Vancouver is a glass city between mountains and sea, with skiing forty minutes from downtown, a ten-kilometre seawall, and the best Asian food in North America in its suburbs. It suits outdoors people and eaters; the city itself is polite, expensive and short on old streets, and the Downtown Eastside's visible poverty is a block from the tourist shops.
What you can do
- 01Walk or cycle the Stanley Park seawall, then continue round False Creek to Granville Island's market.
- 02Take the SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay and bus up to Grouse Mountain, or hike the Grouse Grind if fit.
- 03Eat dim sum in Richmond, ramen on Robson, sushi on Denman, and Japadog from a cart.
- 04Spend an afternoon at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC for the Haida poles and Bill Reid's Raven.
- 05Walk the trails of Lynn Canyon and its suspension bridge, free and quieter than Capilano.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the West End for the park and beach, Gastown for bars and restaurants, Mount Pleasant for a neighbourhood; the Downtown Eastside blocks between Gastown and Chinatown are best walked around, not through, at night.
Unusual things
- ◦Wreck Beach below UBC, a long clothing-optional beach reached by 400 steps through the forest.
- ◦The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Chinatown, built by Suzhou craftsmen without nails or screws.
- ◦Deep Cove in North Vancouver, a fjord village with kayak rentals and the short Quarry Rock hike.
