Why now

Good time in August: 25°C days, 13 rainy days, peak fares.

Summer is festival season, with jazz, comedy and fireworks filling the Quartier des Spectacles in general terms and hotels booking out; early autumn keeps the terraces and adds colour on Mont Royal. February brings ice, the Nuit Blanche and a city that has learned to enjoy the cold.

Best months here: February, June, September. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Montréal is a French-speaking island city that lives outdoors for five months and underground for the rest, with a walkable old port, spiral staircases on the Plateau, and a festival calendar that fills the summer. It suits people who like food, bars and street life in a city that takes itself less seriously than Toronto; winter here is a commitment.

What you can do

  1. 01Climb Mont Royal to the Kondiaronk lookout, then join the Sunday tam-tams drum circle at the Cartier monument.
  2. 02Walk the Plateau's Rue Saint-Denis and Avenue du Mont-Royal, then Jean-Talon Market in Little Italy.
  3. 03Eat smoked meat at Schwartz's, a bagel from St-Viateur still warm, and poutine after midnight.
  4. 04See Old Montréal's Notre-Dame Basilica and the Pointe-à-Callière archaeology museum on the old port.
  5. 05Cycle the Lachine Canal path from the Old Port to Atwater Market and back.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Le Plateau-Mont-RoyalPainted staircases, cafés, bars, the parks; the base for anyone who wants the city rather than the sights.
Old Montréal (Vieux-Montréal)Stone streets and the port; boutique hotels, touristy by day, pleasant early and late.
Mile EndBagel shops, record stores, Hasidic and hipster side by side; quieter than the Plateau, next to it.
Downtown (Centre-ville)Chain hotels, the museums, the underground city; convenient, dull after the offices close.

Stay on the Plateau or in Mile End for the neighbourhood, Old Montréal for a short romantic weekend; downtown only if a conference puts you there.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Oratoire Saint-Joseph, a domed basilica on the mountain's north side with a crypt full of crutches left by pilgrims.
  • ◦Habitat 67, Moshe Safdie's stacked concrete housing on the river, seen from the Old Port or on scheduled tours.
  • ◦The Canadian Centre for Architecture in Shaughnessy Village, exhibitions and a sculpture garden across the road.

Day trips

Québec CityTrain, about 3 hours, or bus — Walled old town and the Château Frontenac; a long day, better with a night.
Mont-TremblantCar or bus, about 1.5 to 2 hours north — Skiing in winter, lakes and hiking in summer; the resort village is manufactured, the mountains are not.
Eastern Townships (Magog and Sutton)Car, about 1.5 hours east — Vineyards, lakes, an abbey at Saint-Benoît-du-Lac and villages that feel like New England.
