Why now

Good time in May: 29°C days, 13 rainy days.

The dry months from about November to April give clear days and cool nights, and the jacarandas bloom in the city in early spring; the rainy season brings afternoon downpours that clear by evening and greener parks. Day of the Dead fills the city in the autumn in general terms, and Sunday is when Reforma closes to cars and the museums are free for residents and busy.

Best months here: January, February, November. May is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Mexico City is a high-altitude megacity built on a drained lake, with Aztec ruins beside a baroque cathedral, Art Deco colonias full of cafés, and street food on every corner that is as good as the restaurants. It suits people who like museums, markets and long walks through neighbourhoods; the altitude, traffic and scale are the tax you pay.

What you can do

  1. 01Spend a full morning in the National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec; the Aztec and Maya halls alone take hours.
  2. 02Walk the Centro Histórico from the Zócalo and Templo Mayor to the Palacio de Bellas Artes and Diego Rivera's murals.
  3. 03Eat tacos al pastor at a street stand, then a long lunch at a fonda, and churros at El Moro after midnight.
  4. 04Take a trajinera boat through the canals of Xochimilco on a weekday morning, before the party boats.
  5. 05Visit Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Coyoacán with a ticket booked well ahead, then the plaza's market for tostadas.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Roma Norte and CondesaArt Deco streets, parks, cafés and most of the good restaurants; the obvious base, full of foreigners now.
Centro HistóricoThe Zócalo, colonial palaces, cantinas; lively by day, quiet on many blocks at night.
CoyoacánCobbled plazas, the Kahlo museum, a village feel; calm and forty minutes from the centre.
PolancoUpscale, near Chapultepec and the Soumaya museum; safe, expensive, less character.

Stay in Roma or Condesa for walking and eating, Coyoacán for quiet, the Centro for a night near the sights; avoid the far north and east of the city, which are not for visitors.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Museo Anahuacalli, Diego Rivera's volcanic-stone pyramid holding his pre-Hispanic collection, south of Coyoacán.
  • ◦Luis Barragán's house and studio in Tacubaya, visited on guided tours booked ahead; colour and light as architecture.
  • ◦The UNAM campus in the south, a UNESCO site of murals, the Central Library's mosaic and the Espacio Escultórico's lava field.

Good to know

The altitude of 2,240 metres affects some visitors for a day or two, and petty theft on crowded Metro cars is common; use app rides rather than hailing street taxis.
