Madrid
You can be here in August for about €1,499, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Off season in August: 35°C days, dry, peak fares.
Spring and autumn are the seasons; July and August are hot enough that the city shuts in the afternoon, and many Madrileños leave. The San Isidro fiestas in late spring and a packed autumn art calendar are the local reasons to time a visit.
Best months here: April, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Madrid is a high, dry capital that lives on its streets and keeps hours nobody else in Europe keeps, with three great galleries within a walk of each other and a bar on every corner. It suits people who like late dinners, art and a city without a single postcard view; it is warmer and more open than its reputation.
What you can do
- 01See the Prado in two halves, Velázquez and Goya first, then the Bosch and Titian rooms on a second morning.
- 02Walk from Sol through La Latina to the Rastro flea market on a Sunday, then vermouth on Cava Baja.
- 03Eat a bocadillo de calamares near Plaza Mayor, cocido at lunch, and churros with chocolate at San Ginés after midnight.
- 04Take the Retiro slowly in the evening, from the Crystal Palace to the lake, then the Reina Sofía for Guernica.
- 05Spend a late evening in Malasaña's bars, or at the Teatro Real for opera, and take the last metro home.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Las Letras, La Latina or the edge of Malasaña for a first visit, Salamanca for quiet; the streets immediately around Sol and Gran Vía are convenient and loud.
Unusual things
- ◦The Museo Sorolla, the painter's house and garden in Chamberí, with the light he painted still in the studio.
- ◦The Temple of Debod, an Egyptian temple gifted to Spain and rebuilt in a park west of Plaza de España.
- ◦The Panteón de Hombres Ilustres, a marble mausoleum of nineteenth-century politicians beside Atocha that hardly anyone visits.
